Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious disease, caused by a virus of the genus
Aphthovirus of the family Picornaviridae. It affects cattle, swine, sheep, goats, deer and other
cloven-hoofed animals. It is widely distributed throughout the world and has the potential
for causing extensive economic losses. There are seven different serotypes of FMD virus,
with many more subtypes. Symptoms vary among affected animals. Cattle and pigs with
foot and mouth disease develop a sudden fever, followed by an eruption of blisters around
the hoovers, in the mouth and nose, and on udders of females. Most sick animals salivate
excessively, and some animals are unable to stand because their hooves become tender and
painful. Sheep and goats may be infected with the disease without showing any symptoms.
The disease is often fatal for young animals. Mature animals infected with foot and mouth
disease usually recover, but they become severely debilitated. Animals may carry the virus for
up to two years. The virus is very easily spread, by contact with an infected animal,
contaminated animal parts or objects and may also spread airborne.
The SVANODIP® FMDV-Ag test is a simple direct test for the detection of all seven serotypes
of the FMDV antigen in swab and tissue samples and can be carried out at penside. It is a rapid
test, which may be carried out on the field, next to the animal. It may be used for early detection
of infection as first line diagnostics for veterinarians in slaughter houses, in farms and in simply
equipped regional laboratories, to control the spreading of infections. The test procedure is
rapid and simple, providing a result within 10 minutes.
A sample preparation kit is required in case of using tissue samples. The SVANODIP® FMDVAg
Extraction kit is designed to extract FMDV-Ag from tissues before performing a test with
the SVANODIP® FMDV-Ag test.
